7.8. Tourism as a Trade

Tourism in India has grown substantially over the last three decades. More than 15 million people are directly engaged in the tourism industry.

Over the past 30 years, India has seen significant growth in tourism. This growth means that a large number of people, specifically over 15 million, now work directly in the tourism field. This number includes workers in hotels, travel agencies, guides, and others who support the tourism sector.

Imagine a bustling restaurant. As more customers come in, the restaurant hires more cooks, waiters, and cleaners. Similarly, as more tourists visit India, more jobs are created to cater to their needs.

Tourism also promotes national integration, provides support to local handicrafts and cultural pursuits.

Tourism has multiple benefits for a country. It helps bring together people from different regions, fostering a sense of national integration. In addition, it supports local craftspeople and cultural activities by creating demand for handicrafts and experiences related to the local culture.

Think of a cultural festival where people from various parts of the country gather to showcase their crafts and food. Not only do visitors learn about each culture, but artisans also get an opportunity to sell their handicrafts, benefiting the local economy.

Foreign tourists visit India for heritage tourism, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, cultural tourism, medical tourism, and business tourism.

India attracts foreign tourists for various reasons. Heritage tourism allows visitors to explore historical sites. Eco-tourism focuses on enjoying and conserving natural environments. Adventure tourism appeals to those seeking thrills, while cultural tourism offers insights into India's diverse traditions. Medical tourism is growing as many come for affordable healthcare, and business tourism caters to professionals visiting for work.

Picture someone planning a vacation. They might choose India for its ancient temples, a jungle safari, or even to receive medical treatment. This variety shows how tourism can cater to different interests.

There is a vast potential for development of tourism in all parts of the country. Efforts are being made to promote different types of tourism for this upcoming industry.

The potential for tourism growth in India is enormous, meaning there are opportunities everywhere across the country. The government and tourism boards are actively looking to promote various types of tourism to boost this sector, ensuring that all regions benefit.

Consider a gardener who tends to different flowers in a garden. Some flowers attract bees, while others attract butterflies. In the same way, different regions in India can offer unique experiences, attracting tourists with varying interests, ultimately helping the whole garden (the country) thrive.

Prepare a project on the heritage tourism in India. Discuss in the class: What type of tourism may be developed in your state/UT and why? Which areas in your state/UT you find more attractive for development of tourism and why? How tourism may be helpful for the economic development of a region adopting a sustainable development approach?

Students are encouraged to prepare projects focusing on heritage tourism, reflecting on their own states or Union Territories (UTs). They will discuss potential tourism opportunities and how tourism can be sustainably developed to benefit the local economy without harming the environment.
