14.4. Steps for Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity is important for human existence. All forms of life are so closely interlinked that disturbance in one gives rise to imbalance in the others.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, and it is crucial because all living organisms are related. If one species goes extinct, it can disrupt the entire ecosystem, potentially leading to the decline or extinction of other species. This interconnectedness means that we depend on diverse biological resources for food, clean air, water, and other essentials.

Think of biodiversity as a web. If you cut one thread in the web, it becomes weaker and can even collapse. Similarly, when we lose a species, it can lead to problems for other species and ultimately for us.

The world conservation strategy has suggested the following steps for biodiversity conservation: (i) Efforts should be made to preserve the species that are endangered. (ii) Prevention of extinction requires proper planning and management. (iii) Varieties of food crops, forage plants, timber trees, livestock, animals and their wild relatives should be preserved.

To effectively conserve biodiversity, there are specific strategies that must be put into practice. First, identifying endangered species is critical, as these need immediate protection. Second, proper planning and management can prevent extinctions by addressing the threats they face, such as habitat loss and climate change. Lastly, preserving a wide range of crop varieties and livestock ensures that we have resilient food systems capable of withstanding various challenges.

Consider a farmer who plants just one type of crop. If a disease affects that crop, the entire harvest is lost. However, a farmer who grows multiple types of crops is more likely to survive unexpected crises, similar to how preserving various species strengthens ecosystems.

(iv) Each country should identify habitats of wild relatives and ensure their protection. (v) Habitats where species feed, breed, rest and nurse their young should be safeguarded and protected.

Protecting the habitats where species live is essential for biodiversity conservation. This involves identifying areas that are crucial for the survival of species, such as breeding grounds and feeding areas. Ensuring these habitats are safeguarded from development, pollution, and other threats helps maintain the populations of various species.

Imagine a nursery school where children need a safe environment to learn and grow. If the nursery is well-protected, the children thrive. Similarly, protecting natural habitats allows wildlife to flourish.

(vi) International trade in wild plants and animals to be regulated.

The international trade of wildlife can pose serious risks to biodiversity, as over-exploitation may lead to the decline of species. Regulating this trade ensures that it is done sustainably and ethically, allowing communities to benefit from their natural resources without threatening the species involved.

Think of a popular flower that is harvested for sale. If harvested excessively without care for its growth, it might become rare. By regulating how much can be picked and ensuring it grows back, we can enjoy the flower without risking its future.

There is an increasing consciousness of the fact that such conservation with sustainable use is possible only with the involvement and cooperation of local communities and individuals.

Involving local communities in biodiversity conservation is vital. They rely on local resources for their livelihoods and often possess knowledge about sustainable practices. Engaging them ensures that conservation efforts are meaningful and effective, as they can offer insights and support for protecting their natural environment.

Imagine a community deciding to protect a local river. If they are involved in the planning and decision-making, they are more likely to take care of it and ensure that it stays clean and healthy for future generations.
