These activities differentiate themselves from simpler services through their reliance on specialized education and training.

Think of a medical researcher working on a new drug. Just like how they need to have extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry, quaternary workers, such as the CEO or a medical transcriptionist, utilize specialized skills to handle complex tasks that contribute to the economy.

Quaternary activities involve the collection, production and dissemination of information or even the production of information. They centre around research, development and can be seen as an advanced form of services involving specialised knowledge and technical skills.

This sector emphasizes leadership and innovative thinking.
