5.4. Biosphere Reserve

Biosphere reserves are special areas designated to help protect and preserve the variety of life in a certain region. This includes all forms of life, such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. By having protected areas, we can ensure that these species and their habitats are safe from threats like pollution, development, and climate change.

Think of a biosphere reserve like a big garden in a park. Just like a gardener takes care of the plants in a garden, wildlife reserves take care of the natural environments and the creatures living there to keep them healthy and thriving.

As you are aware that biodiversity is the variety of plants, animals and microorganisms generally found in an area. The biosphere reserves help to maintain the biodiversity and culture of that area.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. It includes all living things and their roles in the ecosystem. Maintaining biodiversity is crucial because it ensures natural sustainability for all living organisms. Biosphere reserves play a vital role by providing a space where different species can thrive and interact naturally, thus preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the area.

Imagine a school where each student brings a different talent to the table. If there are many talents (like singing, painting, or sports), the school experience is richer and more enjoyable. Similarly, biodiversity enriches our environment, making it more robust and adaptable.

A biosphere reserve may also contain other protected areas in it. The Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve consists of one national park named Satpura and two wildlife sanctuaries named Bori and Pachmarhi (Fig. 5.1).

Biosphere reserves are often made up of various types of protected areas such as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. In the case of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve, it includes the Satpura National Park and two wildlife sanctuaries. This diversity in protected areas allows for a greater variety of ecosystems and species to be preserved.

Think of a biosphere reserve like a big library. Just like a library has different sections for various subjects such as science, history, and art, a biosphere reserve has different types of protected environments that support a wide range of wildlife and plant species.

Activity 5.4: List the factors disturbing the biodiversity of your area. Some of these factors and human activities may disturb the biodiversity unknowingly. List these human activities. How can these be checked? Discuss in your class and write a brief report in your notebook.

This activity encourages students to think critically about their own environment. By identifying human activities that harm biodiversity, such as pollution or deforestation, students can better understand the impacts of their actions. The goal is to create awareness and find ways to mitigate these harmful effects, emphasizing the importance of protecting biodiversity in their local area.
