Consumers International
The concept of consumer protection reached an international level with the establishment of Consumers International (CI). In 1985, the United Nations adopted the UN Guidelines for Consumer Protection, which served as a framework for nations to implement measures focused on consumer rights. Consumers International has since become an umbrella organization for over 200 consumer advocacy groups from more than 100 countries. This coalition plays an instrumental role in advocating for just business practices and raising awareness about consumer rights globally. The effectiveness of this movement is exemplified in the pressure it has exerted on governments and businesses to rectify unfair practices detrimental to consumers. The enactment of the Consumer Protection Act in India in 1986, known as COPRA, is one such important development facilitated by collective consumer advocacy efforts.
