2.1. Sheet Piles

First let us see what are these sheet piles? The sheet piles so we might have seen this kind of steel sheet piles, so they are with interlocking joints, you can see that. So, they act like a rigid barrier for earth and water particularly during excavations or trenching. So, to protect the trench from the collapse, to prevent the trench from the collapse of soil, we go for this kind of sheet piles.

When a trench is dug, the soil around it can collapse. Sheet piles act as strong walls that hold the earth in place, preventing such collapses.

Imagine building a sandcastle near the shore. As the tide comes in, the wet sand becomes loose and can collapse. If you were to build small walls around your castle with plastic sheets, those sheets would act like sheet piles, holding the sand and water back to protect your castle.

For excavation or the soil conditions requiring temporary or permanent bracing to support the lateral load imposed by the soil, we go for this kind of sheet piles. So, it acts like a rigid barrier supporting the lateral load from the soil, it can also be used in water, like a cofferdam.

Sheet piles can be used in various scenarios, such as creating temporary walls during excavations or providing permanent support in areas with poor soil. They are highly effective in watery environments like rivers or lakes, where they can form cofferdams—temporary structures that allow for dry work areas underwater.

Think of a beach umbrella that provides shade on the sand. Just like the umbrella stands firmly in the sand, sheet piles provide support against the weight of water and soil around them. A cofferdam can be visualized as a large beach umbrella that holds back water so that construction can happen in a dry area.

So, you can use any type of material like you can go for timber sheet piles or steel sheet piles or concrete sheet piles, so it can be made out of different types of materials. So, commonly you can see applications and retaining walls and cofferdams as I discussed just now.

Sheet piles can be constructed from various materials, including timber, steel, and concrete. Timber is often used for smaller projects or where environmental concerns are paramount. Steel sheet piles offer greater strength and durability for large construction works, while concrete sheet piles may be used when heavy-duty support is required, particularly in permanent installations.

Consider a sandwich: the different layers can represent different materials used in sheet piles. Just like a sandwich combines bread, vegetables, and meats to create something nutritious, sheet piles can be made from various materials to handle different environmental conditions and loads in construction.
