Understanding the difference between JEE Main percentile vs rank is key for any serious aspirant. You may hear both terms often. They matter during counselling, college admissions, and in your test score analysis. But what exactly do they mean? This guide breaks down the entire process. You’ll learn how percentile and ranks are calculated. You’ll also discover how this impacts JoSAA counselling, and how to use AllRounder.ai to track your progress.
Your JEE Main rank shows your position among test takers. Suppose you score 90th percentile. That means 90% of students scored the same or below. But your actual rank depends on how many students took the exam that day. A percentile of 90 could be rank 50,000 or higher.
Rank = number of students above you + 1
Example: If 100,000 appeared and 1,000 scored higher, your rank would be 1,001.
A percentile score describes relative performance. It shows the percentage of candidates who scored equal to or less than you.
The NTA uses percentile to compare students across different sessions. Scores between sessions are normalized using percentile. For example, the first session in January and second session in April are compared using percentile scores instead of raw marks.
With multiple sessions each year, performance must be compared fairly. Percentile does that. You get a fair comparison regardless of when you took the test.
If your percentile is high, you did well compared to your peers. That boosts your confidence and helps during admission.
Percentile is not just (your marks / total marks) * 100
. It's calculated session-wise. Here's how:
NTA formula:
Percentile = 100 × (number of students with raw score ≤ your score) / (total students in session)
This ensures fairness across different exam days.
Exam difficulty may vary each day. One session may have tougher questions than another. If we used raw marks, students from the harder session would be at a disadvantage. Percentile evens things out.
This makes percentile a fair measure when all sessions are merged and rank is finalized.
After all sessions, NTA merges percentiles to prepare a combined merit list. Your final JEE Main rank is based on your percentile across all sessions.
Example: If you scored 99.5 percentile overall, you are in the top 0.5%. If 8 lakh students appeared, your rank is approximately 4,000.
Counselling bodies use rank in seat allotment. But percentile helps set categories and cut-offs when sessions are combined.
Let’s look at a real-world example:
Thus, NTA uses percentile to ensure fairness. Final rank depends on percentile, not just marks.
Boost accuracy – Avoid negative marking
Appear in both sessions to improve chances
Practice topic-wise
Take mock tests

Counselling cut-off scores are often percentile-based.
Example: A college sets a cut-off of 98 percentile. If you score 98.5, you qualify even if raw marks vary between sessions.
Percentile helps define category-wise eligibility.
Percentile ≠ percent marks
