38.4. Ill effects of parking

Parking has got some ill-effects like congestion, accidents, obstruction to fire-fighting operations etc.

By parking, there will be loss in the street space which leads to the lowering of the road capacity. Hence speed will be reduced, journey time and delay will also subsequently increase. The operational cost of the vehicle increases leading to great economical loss to the community.

Congestion occurs when vehicles are parked on streets, which takes up space that could otherwise be used for moving traffic. This lost space reduces the overall capacity of the road, making it harder for other vehicles to travel effectively. As a result, speeds decrease and travel times increase because vehicles are forced to navigate around parked cars, often leading to traffic delays. This not only inconveniences drivers but also increases the operational costs associated with fuel and time spent in traffic.

Imagine trying to move through a crowded hallway where people are standing around talking. The more people who park themselves in the way, the harder it is for others to pass through. Similarly, when cars are parked along the road, they block the flow of traffic just like standing people block a hallway.

Careless maneuvering of parking and unparking leads to accidents which are referred to as parking accidents. Common type of parking accidents occur while driving out a car from the parking area, careless opening of the doors of parked cars, and while bringing in the vehicle to the parking lot for parking.

Parking accidents typically happen for a few reasons, such as a driver misjudging the space when pulling out or not being aware of their surroundings. For instance, while reversing out of a parking spot, a driver may not see an oncoming vehicle, leading to a collision. Additionally, if a parked car's door is opened carelessly, it can cause injury to passing pedestrians or create sudden surprises for drivers.

Think about walking in a busy area where people frequently open car doors without checking for cyclists or pedestrians. These moments can lead to accidents, similar to how cars moving in and out of parking spaces need to be handled with care to avoid collisions.

Parked vehicles may obstruct the movement of fire-fighting vehicles. Sometimes they block access to hydrants and access to buildings.

When emergency vehicles like fire trucks need to reach a fire, parked cars can create significant obstacles. If there are too many cars blocking the road or if they are parked too close to fire hydrants, the fire service may struggle to get to the scene quickly. Additionally, if a building's entrance is obstructed by parked cars, rescuing anyone trapped inside could take longer, which can be critical in emergencies.

Consider a scenario where a fire starts in a building. If several cars are parked in front of it, the fire truck may not be able to get close enough to use its hose and pump water. This situation is like trying to squeeze through a cluttered exit during an emergency evacuation - it slows everyone down and can increase the danger.

They also cause pollution to the environment because stopping and starting of vehicles while parking and unparking results in noise and fumes. They also affect the aesthetic beauty of the buildings because cars parked at every available space creates a feeling that building rises from a plinth of cars.

When vehicles frequently start and stop in parking areas, they not only generate harmful emissions but also increase noise pollution. The exhaust from idling vehicles contributes to air pollution, while the sounds from engines revving and horns honking disturb the peace of the area. Moreover, the visual aspect of having cars parked everywhere can detract from the beauty of buildings and neighborhoods, creating an unsightly landscape.

Imagine living in a serene neighborhood filled with beautiful parks and gardens. Suddenly, if every inch of space is occupied by parked cars, the charm and tranquility of that area would diminish significantly, much like how excessive noise from traffic can drown out the songs of birds.
