The Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) is a fast cache that stores a limited number of page table entries. When the CPU needs a page table entry, it first checks the TLB before accessing the main memory.
The TLB is designed for speed. When the CPU needs to translate a virtual address to a physical address, it first checks the TLB, which can quickly provide the needed information if there is a match (called a 'hit'). If the TLB does not have the entry (a 'miss'), the CPU must then access the slower main memory. This TLB allows for accessing frequently used page table entries much more rapidly, improving overall system performance.
Think of the TLB as a quick reference guide or index for a website. Instead of searching the entire site for information, you can look up a topic in the index and find the page much quicker. If you don’t find it in the index, only then do you start browsing through all the pages on the site.

When there is a miss in the TLB, the CPU must retrieve the requested page table entry from memory. Depending on whether the data is in memory or not, this can lead to either simply fetching the entry or incurring a page fault.
If the TLB does not contain the required page table entry, the CPU must fetch that entry from the full page table in memory. If the entry exists, it can be brought into the TLB and the CPU can proceed. If the entry does not exist (i.e., the required data is not in any page frame in memory), it leads to a page fault and the operating system must handle loading the required data from disk into memory.
This situation can be likened to a library system where a book is not available on the shelf. If the book exists in the library's records (memory), the librarian can fetch it quickly. However, if the book is not in the library at all and needs to be ordered from another branch, that's like a page fault—additional time and steps are required to retrieve the necessary item.
