So, now immediately after the post-Tsunami when I visited the place, the important issues are the food security, you know how to get their rations because they are all after the relief stage when they settle somewhere, so their daily needs, this is where every ration shop is full of queues, every water facility because their infrastructure has been damaged because of the Tsunami, where do they get the drinking water you know and their livelihood is in threat.

Immediately after the Tsunami, the people faced serious challenges, particularly regarding food and water. Many were struggling to secure daily necessities as their homes and infrastructure had been severely damaged. Essential services such as ration shops and water facilities were overwhelmed with long queues, indicating the urgent need for assistance and resources to sustain life after the disaster.

Imagine a community after a flood where all grocery stores are flooded and families have lost their homes. People line up for hours just to get basic food supplies like bread and bottled water, highlighting the desperation and need for immediate relief.

And the traditional houses you know and their indigenous knowledge how they oriented their houses, they are climatically efficient, how it suits their livelihood needs.

The traditional houses built by the community were designed based on indigenous knowledge that allowed them to be climatically efficient. This means the homes were constructed in ways that suited both the local climate and the lifestyle of the inhabitants, providing them with comfort and functionality.

Think of a house in a snowy area, designed with sloped roofs to prevent snow accumulation. In the same way, the homes on the coastline have features that help them withstand storms or high winds, based on the community's understanding of their environment.

And different typologies of houses, this is in Tharangambadi and how different layouts of these houses like a joint family house, a nuclear family house.

In Tharangambadi, various housing types exist, reflecting the needs of different family structures. Some houses are designed for joint families, where multiple generations live together, while others are set up for nuclear families, consisting of parents and their children. This diversity in housing caters to the unique social structures of the community.

Consider how some homes in a city are built to accommodate large extended families, featuring multiple bedrooms and shared spaces, while others are smaller, aimed at just parents and their kids. This variation helps families live according to their traditions and needs.

And their public places, how they were damaged. This is a huge infrastructure has been damaged.

The disaster not only affected individual homes but also crucial public places and infrastructure. Schools, markets, and community centers faced significant destruction, impacting people's ability to gather, learn, and collaborate in recovering from the disaster.

After a hurricane, not only homes suffer damage, but roads, schools, and community parks might be destroyed too. Just like a city needs functioning roads and schools for its residents to thrive, a community depends on its public spaces to rebuild and connect.

But one has to look at it but if you look at the evidences if a correct information has been passed down to these places, it took 180 minutes which is about 3 hours to reach to get these waves into the mainstream, you know to the mainland...

Timely and accurate information is crucial during a disaster. In this case, it took around three hours for the information regarding the Tsunami to reach the affected areas. Had the warnings been delivered more effectively, it could have saved lives and prevented further losses. Effective communication can mitigate the impact of such catastrophic events.

Imagine if a school fire started and the alarm didn't go off until several minutes later. The quicker everyone knows about it, the faster they can respond and evacuate safely, just like the need for timely disaster warnings that can save lives.

There is always a relief stage, there is a rehabilitation stage which goes for a few months and the final is the reconstruction stage...

Disaster recovery follows specific stages: relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. During the relief stage, immediate needs are addressed, such as food and shelter. Rehabilitation focuses on restoring basic services and community rebuilding, and reconstruction involves long-term development to rebuild more resilient infrastructure.

After a sports game, there’s a period where fans clean up, then a time when the field is repaired, and finally a stage where improvements are made for the next season. Similarly, communities go through these phases post-disaster to return to normalcy and build back better.

So, I am talking about the transitional shelter. So what they did was an immediate requirement for them as where to live, many of them lost their houses...

Transitional shelters are a temporary solution provided to those who lost their homes during the disaster. Many families received tin sheets to create basic shelters, enabling them to have a place to live while they await more permanent housing solutions. This type of shelter serves as a critical step in the recovery process.

Think of putting up a tent while your house is being rebuilt after a fire. It helps to have shelter, even if it's temporary, to protect from the elements while you secure a more permanent solution.

And this is where the time where people have some professional minds come together, they started showing some choices...

As the community began rebuilding, professionals worked alongside the affected individuals to present housing options. This participatory approach allowed community members to have a say in decisions about their new shelters, fostering ownership and ensuring that the solutions met their needs.

Imagine a family remodeling their home, discussing design options with an architect. By involving everyone in the decision-making process, they ensure the new space reflects their interests and needs, enhancing satisfaction with the final result.

And there are issues like how this material could be reused in these two years, what are the things we have to address, children schooling, the community's health facilities...

The transition phase poses several challenges, including the reuse of materials from transitional shelters, ensuring that children receive education, and maintaining community health and livelihood. Addressing these areas is critical for successful recovery and progressive development.

Like reusing bricks from a demolished building to construct a new one, communities must find ways to repurpose materials. Additionally, just as families prioritize education for their children after a move, communities need to find ways to maintain schooling and health services as they rebuild.
