Hard and Soft Water
Water is classified as either hard or soft based on its mineral content, particularly concerning dissolved calcium and magnesium salts. Hard water is characterized by its difficulty in lathering with soap due to these dissolved minerals. Two types of hardness exist:
- Temporary Hardness: This is caused by the presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium, which can be removed by boiling the water.
- Permanent Hardness: This results from sulfates or chlorides of calcium and magnesium and requires chemical treatment for removal.
In contrast, soft water is devoid of these minerals, which allows it to readily produce lather with soap. Understanding the differences between hard and soft water is essential, as these properties influence both daily activities, such as cleaning and cooking, and larger environmental processes.
