When a photograph is taken directly downwards (with no tilt), this vertical line aligns precisely with the optical axis of the camera lens. In simpler terms, think of the plumb line as a straight line hanging down from the point where the photograph is being taken, showing us exactly what is 'down' in relation to the camera.

Imagine you are holding a string with a weight at the end; this string naturally hangs straight down due to gravity. It represents the plumb line.
