The drafting process of the Convention involved not just member states but also civil society organizations, especially Disabled Persons' Organizations (DPOs).

The adoption process of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) was collaborative. It was not solely crafted by member states of the United Nations; civil society, particularly organizations that represent the interests of persons with disabilities, played a significant role. This inclusion ensured that the voices and needs of disabled individuals were acknowledged and addressed in the drafting process.

Think of it like a group project in school. If only a few people present their ideas without input from the entire group, the final project may not reflect what everyone wants or needs. Just as in a group project, where each member's perspective is valuable for achieving a better result, the UNCRPD was strengthened by contributions from disabled persons' organizations.

The motto 'Nothing about us without us' was central to the formation of the UNCRPD.

This motto encapsulates the essence of the UNCRPD’s development process. It emphasizes that people with disabilities should have a say in decisions and policies that affect their lives. The phrase insists that disabled individuals are not just subjects of policy but active participants in the creation and implementation of those policies. This approach helps ensure that their rights and perspectives are integral to what the convention aims to achieve.

Imagine a scenario where a new school lunch menu is decided without asking students about their preferences. Similarly, the UNCRPD recognizes that for laws and policies to be effective and respectful of human rights, they must involve those they impact directly.

India was one of the first countries to sign and ratify the UNCRPD on 1 October 2007, committing itself to its implementation.

India's action in signing and ratifying the UNCRPD demonstrated a significant commitment to disability rights. By doing this, India officially recognized the principles laid out in the convention and agreed to take necessary steps to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoyed their rights on an equal basis with others. This commitment marks an important step in changing how disability is perceived and addressed in India.
