India’s MGNREGA (Social Policy)
MGNREGA is a landmark social policy enacted in India to ensure guaranteed wage employment for rural households. The primary objective is to enhance livelihood security by providing at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a financial year. This program has been pivotal in empowering rural communities and reducing the need for migration to urban areas for work. However, despite its strengths, MGNREGA faces various challenges, including delays in wage payments and inadequate monitoring of its implementation. These weaknesses can hinder its effectiveness and impact, raising questions about the sustainability of such welfare measures. Thus, while MGNREGA serves as an essential case study for social policies, it exemplifies both the potential and the obstacles in addressing rural employment in India.
