Vast Underemployment
In India, underemployment is a pressing issue, particularly in agricultural sectors that rely on unirrigated lands. This phenomenon leads to seasonal unemployment that can last anywhere from four to eight months throughout the year. During the cropping season, workers also face intermittent availability of jobs, as agricultural practices in these regions are not labor-intensive enough to guarantee continuous employment throughout the year. Thus, the agricultural workforce often has limited opportunities to work regularly, exacerbating economic challenges in rural areas.
