The Citadel
The Citadel of Mohenjodaro is a key archaeological site that reflects the urban sophistication of the Harappan civilization. Two notable structures found within the Citadel are the Great Bath and the warehouse.
Key Structures
-
The Great Bath: This large rectangular tank was situated in a courtyard and is surrounded by a corridor on all four sides. There are two flights of steps leading into the tank, which was made watertight using special brick-setting techniques and gypsum mortar. Its purpose is believed to be ceremonial or ritualistic, given the unique construction and location in the Citadel.
-
The Warehouse: A massive structure, part of which remains in brick form, suggests that it was used for storage, possibly of surplus grain or trade goods. The upper parts of the warehouse have decayed, but their existence indicates advanced administrative practices.
Importance of the Citadel
These features contribute to our understanding of public life in the Harappan civilization, highlighting social organization, urban planning, and possible ritualistic practices that characterized this advanced culture. The Citadel stands as a testament to the sophisticated urban life of the period, showcasing both the functional and ceremonial aspects of Harappan society.
