3. Visual Tools and Critical Learning

Digital tools shape the way we think and understand the world around us. They aid in our design capabilities and influence our thought processes. When using technology in education, it's important to recognize how these tools affect comprehension and creativity.

Imagine using a sophisticated drawing app on a tablet. While it allows you to create beautiful designs, it also teaches you about color theory and spatial relationships in a way that traditional methods may not.

Now, the one of the useful tools which have come up with the geographic spatial information technology; the GIS tools where you can see from one of my students work of the hazard landslip because the satellite imagery plays an important role but now to what extent, we have to include that satellite imagery at B Arch level or we plan because they deal with much more of a larger scale projects of city planning or the regional planning, for them GIS is already within the subject, in the curriculum.

Think of GIS as a digital map that not only shows locations but also underlying data like population density and environmental hazards. Just as a GPS helps you navigate a city, GIS helps urban planners navigate complex data for city development.

Also, the GIS is one of the useful tool but one has to know that what scale you have to apply and what scale the macro-level scale to the micro-level scale, how one can understand, the moment it goes to your site-level how this information would be useful, I think that is where the gap comes in between.

When using GIS tools, understanding the scale of your project is crucial. Different scales (macro to micro) dictate how data is interpreted and applied, particularly when transitioning from broader planning tasks to specific site-level applications.

Consider planning a new park. At a macro level, you might analyze city demographics, but as you zoom into the micro level, you might focus on soil quality and local flora. Each perspective provides different crucial insights for decision-making.

It's similar to a cooking competition where time is limited; participants must not only rely on their recipes but also their skills and quick thinking to create a dish. The hands-on experience enhances learning and retention.

Also, when I was doing my research, I used to engage some of the B. Arch students along with me, I should take them to the villages and they used to interact with the villagers...

Interacting with local communities provides invaluable real-world insights that cannot be replicated in a classroom. Students learn about local issues, cultural contexts, and practical challenges faced by people, enhancing their empathy and understanding.

Like a journalist conducting interviews, students gather firsthand stories that shape their understanding of the community. These experiences reveal deeper truths than what textbooks can provide, influencing their design choices.

And similarly, some of the things what I also developed is; we have so much of information to read but how much to read and how to synthesize...

Learning to sift through information is essential. By assigning topics for group research, students develop skills in identifying key points, synthesizing findings, and compiling them into a cohesive format, fostering collaborative learning.

Think of this process like a band coming together to create a song. Each member brings their part, and through collaboration, they create a harmonious piece instead of individual noise.

So, here for B plan students in SPA, Bhopal, what we did was we given them a task of a disaster context whether it was a village, under the dam and a flooded area...

Role-playing allows students to actively engage in discussions and problem-solving as they assume various key roles in disaster scenarios. This immersive practice helps them understand different perspectives and challenges in planning and implementing solutions.

It's akin to a simulation exercise in a medical school where students role-play as doctors, nurses, and patients. They learn to collaborate and communicate effectively, preparing them for real-life situations.

And then I asked them to read and analyse and make a critical review of their understanding...

Engaging with scholarly texts and requiring students to summarize and highlight key themes fosters critical thinking. This method ensures material is not only read but also absorbed and understood deeply.

Similar to creating a study guide, students distill complex information into digestible chunks, making it easier to recall essential concepts for future reference.

So, this is how I was trying to develop various methods and obviously, these are all my trial and error process...
